...English style?

Just how "dirty", "uncouth", "rude" etc is the word the English (in England) use when they say "bl**dy"? How would you rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 with "1" being quite mild and "10" the absolute worse.

I ran across it somewhere recently and to us Americans (speaking for myself) it doesn't come off as really 'dirty'. But I was thinking that ya'll might consider it the utmost in 'bad' words. Not only that, but over here we have quite a vocabulary of 'dirty' words, but that is the only one that I can find that the English use. Surely there must be others? Spencer, our resident erotica personage? Yes? no?

My French professor did teach us one in French: mon petit chou. ;-) That is as bad as she would get.
I'm having the same problem with B12 measurments.

Our health insurance is structured so that once you pay $3600 in a single year in medical expenses, you get the rest of the year's medical expenses at between 10-20%.

My son is taking an acne medication that is over $500 for a 6-week supply, but the pharmaceutical company provides a card that you use when you get the drug that makes it just $25. On my latest insurance statement, the insurance company is counting the full $528 for the med instead of the $25 I paid against the deductible, putting us a lot closer to meeting the deductible much earlier in the year than usual

Should I tell them? Do they have to count the full over-the-counter price even though the company has a scheme for reducing it for the customer?

Every year around this time the lesson for our kindergarten through 4th grade class requires reading a small book which is now out of print. The only place to get the book is our local library. This year the book was checked out so I couldn't get it or find it on Amazon. The teacher even went to a nearby town to try and check it out but, alas, no luck. She picked a different book.
Yesterday I was able to get it and I copied all 27 pages, including the title page. and put it in the file for future years.
I have never bought or sold anything via online auction so I have no firsthand knowledge. I expect that different auction sites may have different practices, so if you answer this post please make the extent of your knowledge clear.

1. Can the end time for bidding be extended by the seller?

2. Is information about an item to be sold posted in advance of activation of the bidding?
3. How are payments for an item made? Is this typically left up to the seller to determine as a condition of sale, or does the auction site typically specify a method (or menu of possible methods)?

Quotes Wanted: "True love" (15 replies)

I am looking for witty, epigrammic or otherwise memorable quotes containing the phrase "true love." The quote should have one or, ideally, both of the following attributes:

a. It conveys, or implies, the notion that true love is a thing much coveted but very elusive.

b. It contains the phrase "true X", with "X" being some word other than "love", and it compares "true love" with "true X"

Reason: I'm writing a scholarly paper on the topic of "true sale", a phrase with a well established meaning in the law. The status of a transaction as a "true sale" is also much coveted but very elusive. I'd like to play on the similarity of "true sale" to "true love" in the introductory paragraph. So I am looking for a quote to serve as inspiration, or, better yet, to use directly (with footnote attribution of the original, of course).

Television question for electronics people HD, LCD, Blueray (10 replies)

My old Zenith television in about August or so had a picture tube malfunction and I have needed to buy a new TV to hook up to cable for some time. I have been dithering over what to buy and thought I had narrowed it down to probably a Sony or Samsung around 40" LCD. Now this morning, on NPR I hear something about the format for DVD's will be standardized to favor Blueray over HD.

Does anyone know, would that affect this choice. If I bought a Samsung LCD (which would be compatible with my current VCR/DVD player). Is that a problem for the future if Blueray becomes the standard? Hope this makes sense. I hardly even know what I am talking about and it has taken me months to get even this far.

But I need to get a TV hooked up to cable before baseball and the next Tennis Grand Slam. I already missed the Westminster Kennel Club when a beagle won (Uno) which I had been waiting for my whole life. Ordered the commemorative DVD with extras but I just can't believe the only WKC I haven't watched in 20 years and my beloved Beagle finally wins.

Someone asked for the song sung by RW. I think that this song is it:

I walked into a honkey tonkey just the other day
I droped a nickle in the juke box just to hear it play
I didnt have no tune in mind, I didnt wait to choose
Just droped a nickle in the slot and I played the juke box blues

Theres a guy in there with an old tin horn
And a feller on an old banjo, and the man of the fiddle
He wasn't no slouch he could really drag that bow
Well, the man on the fiddle he must have got tired
I didnt hear him say, 'cause he cut loose on the steel guitar
And the juke box ran away
And I've herd something going strong
It must have been a drum
It gave that song a solid beat
Boy it was goin' some

I walked into a honkey tonkey just the other day
I droped a nickle in the juke box just to hear it play
I didnt have no tune in mind, I didnt wait to choose
Just droped a nickle in the slot and I played the juke box blues

I've played alot of juke boxes, most everyone in town
That's the first tune I've ever heard
That can make one night surround
Play the juke box blues, such a rythum I've never heard
I danced out both of my shoes
BTW, what exactly does borrowing at sub-prime rate mean--is that just eco-speak for getting an adjustable rate mortgage?

It's a new one for my (pretty interesting) list of objects found along the road: a cell phone. It's working, but has a low battery so I can't really look around the menu. It's US cellular service. I'm thinking if I take it to one of their places they'll be able to get it returned? (It's a nice motorola flip-phone, not a disposable.) Does anyone know?

Coach seating space and other travel travails (18 replies)

There was a Blog article in the NYT that got me to thinking about what an unpleasant experience airline travel is these days.

When I first took an airplane trip, maybe it was in high school to go to Washington DC, flying was kind of an adventure and fun. You looked forward to it. There was enough space to sit and breathe, the food was ok, maybe not spectacular but edible. If there was time, you might even get to go into the cockpit to see what that was like. The flight attendants seemed to not be overrushed, the whole thing was like something out of a 50's movie with Sinatra singing "Come Fly With Me" in the background.

Now, it is just a nightmare to travel. Increased security, removing your shoes, can't bring my book bag along, just a purse, the special bottles your toiletries have to be in unless you check your bag etc etc.

The space in seats is less while people are larger than ever (at least in the states this is the case). Then the person in front of you reclines their seat into what I think of as my space. I do not recline my seat and I have a Scandinavian reticence to challenge the reclining person to not recline it so far. The air does not circulate very well.

What can be done about this situation? One solution would be to fly First Class but the amount to do so is astronomical and I don't consider this an option. Planes are flying at close to capacity. The price is about the only thing that is mostly right.

Is there any hope for the coach passenger to some day have enough air, enough space. This doesn't seem like that much to ask.

Coach passengers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your chains.

Kay Jewelers is advertising Christmas diamonds and on one commercial, the song playing in the background goes "It's very possible I could be falling for you/It's very clear that I've fallen quite hard over you/I've seen the paths that your eyes wander down, I want to come too....."
